Documents for Slovakia: Apostille and Sworn Slovak Translation for Work, Residence and Nostrification
If you are preparing Ukrainian documents for Slovakia – for work, residence (pobyt), study and diploma nostrification, marriage or family reunification – you usually need two things: an apostille on the Ukrainian original (Ukraine is in the Hague Convention) and a sworn translation into Slovak, called úradný (súdny) preklad in Slovakia and done by a súdny prekladateľ, a translator entered in the register of the Slovak Ministry of Justice. Ukraine and Slovakia have a legal-assistance treaty (Slovakia succeeded the 1982 Czechoslovak treaty), so for some procedures legalisation is simplified, and for nostrification of a Ukrainian diploma the law does not list an apostille among the attachments to the application – but Slovak institutions almost always require an official Slovak translation prepared to their rules.

Apostille or sworn translation: what Slovakia really requires
Ukraine and Slovakia are both parties to the Hague Convention, so a Ukrainian document can be apostilled for use in Slovakia. At the same time the two states have a legal-assistance treaty (Slovakia inherited the 1982 Czechoslovak treaty, as did the Czech Republic), so for some procedures legalisation is simplified and an apostille is sometimes not required. But "no apostille" does not mean "no translation": a Slovak institution almost always requires the document to be translated by a súdny prekladateľ – a translator entered in the register (zoznam) of the Slovak Ministry of Justice.

Zakarpattia borders Slovakia, so the largest flow of documents for work, study and pobyt in Slovakia comes from here – from Uzhhorod, Mukachevo and the whole region. Why a sworn Slovak translation (úradný preklad), not an ordinary one
To submit to a Slovak institution you need an úradný (súdny) preklad – a translation made and stamped by a súdny prekladateľ, a translator entered in the register of the Slovak Ministry of Justice. Such a translation is physically bound to the document (or to a certified copy) together with the translator's certifying clause. An ordinary or a Ukrainian notarized translation (where a notary certifies only the translator's signature) is usually not accepted by Slovak authorities for official procedures.
An honest clarification: the sworn Slovak translation is our own service, performed by OUR OWN súdny prekladateľ for Slovakia, with no intermediaries and no double markup. Diploma nostrification and pobyt documents in Slovakia
Nostrification (uznanie dokladov o vzdelaní) in Slovakia is needed so your Ukrainian diploma or school certificate is recognised for working in your field or enrolling. For it you usually prepare the diploma with its supplement, sometimes curricula – with a sworn Slovak translation; the law does not list an apostille among the attachments to the application, so it is added only where the authority asks for one. FAQ
Does a Ukrainian document need an apostille for Slovakia?
It depends on the procedure. Ukraine and Slovakia are both in the Hague Convention, so an apostille can be affixed; at the same time a legal-assistance treaty applies, and for some procedures an apostille is not required. But a sworn Slovak translation (úradný/súdny preklad) is almost always needed. We will check the requirements for your situation for free.
What is an úradný (súdny) preklad and who performs it?
Only a court translator from the Slovak Ministry of Justice register may produce one, and at Etalon that is our own translator. Worth knowing about its physical form: such a translation is bound and sealed into a single booklet together with the source document, so it cannot simply be forwarded as a scan unless the institution has said a scan is enough for it. Ask them that one question before ordering, and tell us the answer - it decides how the finished set has to travel to you.

Yes - and the nearby border speeds nothing up: the apostille on a Ukrainian document is placed in Ukraine whether you live twenty kilometres from the border or eight hundred. So driving across with a folder of papers saves nothing; we file the documents ourselves and send the finished set by Nova Poshta to Uzhhorod, Mukachevo or any other town in the region.
