Documents for Slovakia: Apostille and Sworn Slovak Translation for Work, Residence and Nostrification

If you are preparing Ukrainian documents for Slovakia — for work, residence (pobyt), study and diploma nostrification, marriage or family reunification — you usually need two things: an apostille on the Ukrainian original (Ukraine is in the Hague Convention) and a sworn translation into Slovak, called úradný (súdny) preklad in Slovakia and done by a súdny prekladateľ, a translator entered in the register of the Slovak Ministry of Justice. Ukraine and Slovakia have a legal-assistance treaty (Slovakia succeeded the 1982 Czechoslovak treaty), so for some procedures legalisation is simplified — but Slovak institutions almost always require an official Slovak translation prepared to their rules. Etalon covers both steps: we submit the apostille on your behalf to the ministries in Ukraine, and the sworn Slovak translation is done by OUR OWN súdny prekladateľ in Slovakia — no intermediaries, no double markup. A notarized translation starts from UAH 250 per document; sworn translation and apostille are quoted individually, with state fees separate.

  • Our own súdny prekladateľ in Slovakia: sworn (úradný) Slovak translation with no intermediaries and no double markup
  • Apostille on the Ukrainian document submitted on your behalf in Ukraine (MFA / Ministry of Justice / Ministry of Education) — no travel needed
  • Zakarpattia–Slovakia: the shortest corridor; we serve Uzhhorod, Mukachevo and the whole region remotely
  • Typical set: criminal-record certificate, diploma with supplement, birth/marriage certificates, documents for pobyt and nostrification

Apostille or sworn translation: what Slovakia really requires

Ukraine and Slovakia are both parties to the Hague Convention, so a Ukrainian document can be apostilled for use in Slovakia. At the same time the two states have a legal-assistance treaty (Slovakia inherited the 1982 Czechoslovak treaty, as did the Czech Republic), so for some procedures legalisation is simplified and an apostille is sometimes not required. But "no apostille" does not mean "no translation": a Slovak institution almost always requires the document to be translated by a súdny prekladateľ — a translator entered in the register (zoznam) of the Slovak Ministry of Justice.

So we do not guess for you: we will check the requirements for your specific situation for free (cudzinecká polícia, úrad práce, matrika, university, employer) and tell you honestly whether an apostille is needed or a sworn translation is enough — so you do not pay for anything unnecessary.

Zakarpattia–Slovakia: the shortest document corridor

Zakarpattia borders Slovakia, so the largest flow of documents for work, study and pobyt in Slovakia comes from here — from Uzhhorod, Mukachevo and the whole region. We have no office in Zakarpattia, but none is needed: we work remotely with anywhere in the region — you send scans online, we submit the apostille on your behalf in Ukraine and produce the sworn Slovak translation.

Whether you file in Bratislava, Košice, Prešov or Nitra, the format is the same: finished translations and originals go via Nova Poshta or however suits you. Etalon has operated since 2008 (HQ in Kharkiv, plus one office in Kyiv), and for the Slovak direction the format is fully online.

Why a sworn Slovak translation (úradný preklad), not an ordinary one

To submit to a Slovak institution you need an úradný (súdny) preklad — a translation made and stamped by a súdny prekladateľ, a translator entered in the register of the Slovak Ministry of Justice. Such a translation is physically bound to the document (or to a certified copy) together with the translator's certifying clause. An ordinary or a Ukrainian notarized translation (where a notary certifies only the translator's signature) is usually not accepted by Slovak authorities for official procedures.

An honest clarification: the sworn Slovak translation is our own service, performed by OUR OWN súdny prekladateľ for Slovakia, with no intermediaries and no double markup. If your institution strictly requires the signature of a specific translator from its own list, we will tell you so honestly before you pay.

Diploma nostrification and pobyt documents in Slovakia

Nostrification (uznanie dokladov o vzdelaní) in Slovakia is needed so your Ukrainian diploma or school certificate is recognised for working in your field or enrolling. For it you usually prepare the diploma with its supplement, sometimes curricula — with an apostille and a sworn Slovak translation. We handle the whole package: apostille in Ukraine, translation by our own súdny prekladateľ, and advice on which documents your specific university or authority requires.

For residence (prechodný/trvalý pobyt) the list depends on the grounds — work, study, marriage to a Slovak citizen or family reunification — and a sworn translation is needed for almost every document in the set. We unify the spelling of your first and last name to match your international passport across all translations, so the institution does not reject the file over a transliteration discrepancy.

FAQ

Does a Ukrainian document need an apostille for Slovakia?

It depends on the procedure. Ukraine and Slovakia are both in the Hague Convention, so an apostille can be affixed; at the same time a legal-assistance treaty applies, and for some procedures an apostille is not required. But a sworn Slovak translation (úradný/súdny preklad) is almost always needed. We will check the requirements for your situation for free.

What is an úradný (súdny) preklad and who performs it?

It is an official translation made and stamped by a súdny prekladateľ — a translator entered in the register of the Slovak Ministry of Justice. Slovak institutions accept this type of translation for official procedures, not an ordinary or a Ukrainian notarized one. At Etalon it is done by our own súdny prekladateľ.

Who at Etalon does the sworn Slovak translation?

Our own súdny prekladateľ in Slovakia — no intermediaries, no double markup. If your institution requires the signature of a specific translator from its own list, we will tell you so honestly before you pay.

I am from Zakarpattia (Uzhhorod, Mukachevo). Can it be done without travel?

Yes. We have no office in Zakarpattia, but none is needed: we work remotely with the whole region. You send scans online, we submit the apostille on your behalf in Ukraine and produce the sworn Slovak translation, and the finished set goes via Nova Poshta.

How do I nostrify a Ukrainian diploma in Slovakia?

You usually need the diploma with its supplement (sometimes curricula) with an apostille and a sworn Slovak translation. We prepare the whole package: apostille in Ukraine, translation by our own súdny prekladateľ, and advice on what your specific university or authority requires. Send the scans and we will quote.

How much does it cost to prepare documents for Slovakia?

A notarized translation starts from UAH 250 per document. Sworn Slovak translation and apostille are quoted individually on assessment, because the price depends on the document type and length. The apostille state fee is separate. We give the exact amount after reviewing your scans.
