Transliteration of a surname and given name
A free converter: type a Ukrainian surname or given name and get its Latin spelling under Cabinet of Ministers Resolution No. 55 — the same standard the State Migration Service applies when it issues a foreign passport. It handles the cases a flat table cannot show: the зг cluster, the two forms of Є, Ї, Й, Ю, Я, and the soft sign and apostrophe that drop out.

Name transliteration checker (Resolution No. 55)
Type a surname and first name in Ukrainian to get the official Latin spelling used in the passport.
This is a guide based on Cabinet Resolution No. 55. The binding spelling is the one in your existing foreign passport (set by the State Migration Service) – we check the name against it before translating so it matches across all your documents.
The official КМУ №55 transliteration table
There are two Latin columns because five Ukrainian letters are written differently depending on where they sit in a word. For every other letter the two columns match.

Four cases the table does not show
The table maps single letters, but it does not say what to do with clusters or with a letter’s position in a word. Here is how the converter above handles them.
The зг cluster becomes zgh
On their own, з is z and г is h. Written as zh, the cluster would collide with the letter Ж, so the standard gives it a spelling of its own.
зграя → zghraia, згода → zghoda
Є, Ї, Й, Ю, Я each have two forms
At the start of a word they are Ye, Yi, Y, Yu, Ya. Inside a word and at the end they are ie, i, i, iu, ia. After an apostrophe or a soft sign the letter counts as not being at the start.
Яна → Yana, but Мар’яна → Mariana
The soft sign and the apostrophe drop out
Neither has a Latin character: they simply disappear and leave the surrounding letters unchanged.
Коваль → Koval, Мар’ян → Marian
Г, Ґ and Х map three different ways
Г becomes h, Ґ becomes g, Х becomes kh. The Latin g stands for Ґ alone, and neither Г nor Х is ever written with it.
Григорій → Hryhorii, Ґалаґан → Galagan, Харків → Kharkiv
Which spelling is binding
The converter gives you the spelling under the current standard. What binds you personally is the spelling already in your foreign passport: that is the Latin form the authorities treat as your name, even where the passport was issued under older rules.
So in a document translation we use the spelling from the passport, not the one from the table. If there is no foreign passport yet, the translation follows КМУ №55 — the same standard the migration service will apply.
FAQ
Is this converter official?
No. It is a free tool that applies the table from Cabinet of Ministers Resolution No. 55. The official spelling for a given person is set by the State Migration Service when it issues the passport. A match is expected, but the converter’s output is not a document.
Why is my surname spelled differently in my passport?
Resolution No. 55 was adopted on 27 January 2010, so passports issued earlier could be transliterated under different rules. While your passport is valid, the spelling that binds your documents is the one printed in it, not the one in the table.
How do I transliterate a patronymic?
The same way. Type all three words at once: the converter treats each as a separate word, so an initial Є, Ї, Й, Ю or Я in any of them takes the start-of-word form.
Can I use the result for documents submitted abroad?
A translation is submitted together with the passport, so the name in it has to match the passport. Before we certify a translation we check the spelling against your document rather than taking it from the table.
