Southern Zakarpattia holds Ukraine’s largest Hungarian community: per the 2001 census – the most recent one – the oblast was home to 151,500 Hungarians, 12.1% of its population and the absolute majority of all Hungarians in Ukraine; more cautious 2024 estimates put the figure at 70,000-90,000. The Consulate General of Hungary operates in Uzhhorod itself, so part of the Hungarian procedures is reachable without travelling to Hungary.

For documents this means constant two-way traffic: a Ukrainian birth certificate goes to a Hungarian institution in Hungarian translation, while a Hungarian marriage certificate returns to a Ukrainian DRACS office in Ukrainian. This page is built along those two directions.

Hungary’s simplified citizenship-by-descent procedure has been in force since 1 January 2011, and Zakarpattia responded at scale: according to Hungarian-government figures cited by Ukrainian media, about 94,000 Zakarpattia residents had been naturalised by February 2015, with 124,000 applications filed from Ukraine by August of that year. Judging the legal side of that phenomenon is not our job; the documentary part of such cases is.

A file usually rests on birth and marriage certificates of several generations, translated into Hungarian and certified; where originals are missing, repeat documents are first retrieved from DRACS offices or archives. What exactly your case requires is defined by the consulate or your lawyer – we check the list before starting and say honestly what is missing.

The return flow is quieter but constant: children’s birth certificates, marriages concluded in Hungary, Hungarian school certificates and diplomas all eventually reach Ukrainian registries, administrative centres, banks or universities and need a certified Ukrainian translation. Hungarian documents carry their own traps – the surname-first name order, diacritics that vanish in careless transcription, and proper names existing in two versions. One glossary therefore runs the whole family set: a name spelled once stays spelled that way in every translation, in both directions.

One more question comes before any work starts: the certification format. Ukrainian institutions accept notarised translations; Hungarian ones each follow their own rules. We verify the requirement of the specific institution or consulate first, so the set never has to be redone.

The stamp question comes first, the parcel comes last

The opening question in any Hungarian case is not where to get an apostille, but whether your document needs one at all. Ukraine and Hungary are bound by a legal-assistance treaty, so a fair share of Hungarian institutions accept Ukrainian documents with no legalisation whatsoever; where proof of authenticity is required, it takes the form of an apostille, because both countries are Hague Convention members and consular legalisation plays no part between them.
