Which car documents need translating
For a car from Germany or Austria this is typically the registration certificate – Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I and Teil II (Fahrzeugschein and Fahrzeugbrief on older vehicles) – and the purchase contract or invoice. The office sometimes also asks for confirmation that the vehicle was de-registered in the country of origin.

Why it has to be a sworn translation
The translation of vehicle documents must be produced by a sworn translator entered in the Slovak Ministry of Justice register under Act No. 382/2004 Coll. A plain translation – even a correct one – is not accepted; the translation must be bound to the document and carry the translator’s stamp and clause.
You will need this translation at the vehicle-identity check (kontrola originality) and when approving the individually imported vehicle at the district office (road transport department), before the traffic inspectorate issues Slovak plates.
When you do not need a translation
Documents issued in the Czech Republic need no translation – Slovak offices accept them in the original. No translation is needed either when the document is bilingual, i.e. drawn up in the exporting country’s language and in Slovak at the same time – typically a bilingual purchase contract from a dealer.
If you are still buying the car through a dealer, ask for a bilingual contract up front – it saves you one translation. We would rather talk you out of an unnecessary translation than let you pay for it.

Do I have to translate the German registration certificate?

I imported the car from the Czech Republic – is a translation needed?
