Russian-language documents for Slovak authorities

For registry offices, the foreign police, courts, notaries and schools we translate birth and marriage certificates, divorce decrees, diplomas and school certificates, powers of attorney and other documents from Russian. Older civil-status documents issued in Russian during the USSR era are common – we translate those into Slovak under oath too.

The sworn translation must be produced by a translator from the MS SR register; a plain translation is not accepted by the office. We bind the translation to the document and add the clause and stamp.

Documents from outside the EU: apostille and legalisation

This is the key difference from EU documents: the EU multilingual standard forms and the apostille exemption under Regulation 2016/1191 do not apply to documents from Russia, Belarus and other non-EU countries. Such a document usually needs an apostille or consular legalisation – and that is arranged in the country that issued the document, before the translation.

Does a Russian document need an apostille for a Slovak office to accept it?

Usually yes. Documents from non-EU countries (Russia, Belarus and others) are not covered by the apostille exemption under EU Regulation 2016/1191 – they usually need an apostille or consular legalisation from the issuing country, arranged before the translation. I have an older document issued in Russian back in the USSR era. Will you translate it?

Yes – older civil-status documents issued in Russian we translate under oath into Slovak. If the document is hard to read, we agree on the approach when quoting.

I need a translation for the foreign police – and maybe an interpreter too.

We provide both from a single provider: a sworn translation of the documents and a sworn interpreter for the interview. We align the spelling of names so the documents and the interpreted act fit together.

In what order does this work – translation first, or apostille?

The formalities in the country of origin (apostille / legalisation) come first, and only then the sworn translation – because the apostille is translated together with the document. If the order is reversed, the office may reject the document; that is why we clarify it at the start.
