What nostrification is and when you need it

The procedure’s official name is “uznanie dokladu o vzdelaní zo zahraničia”: a Slovak authority reviews your foreign diploma, school certificate or supplement and decides whether it corresponds to Slovak education. Without that decision you cannot enter a regulated profession – healthcare, education, technical fields – and in most cases cannot continue your studies; many employers ask for it too.

The goal has to be settled first, not the document: an application for academic recognition and one for recognition of a professional qualification follow different routes with different attachments. We tell you which route matches your situation before you translate anything.

Košice as a university city: TUKE and UPJŠ

Košice is among the strongest university centres in the east and has a substantial international student community. The Technical University of Košice reports 6,551 international students out of 13,500 in total, with students from Ukraine the most numerous among them; the UPJŠ Medical Faculty states on its own site that roughly half of its students come from abroad, from more than 50 countries of the world.

Behind every such enrolment is a foreign education document that has to be recognised before admission or professional work. For applicants we therefore most often prepare the school-leaving certificate, the diploma with its supplement and the birth certificate – sworn-translated and in the right order with an apostille.

SUDV decides on recognition – centrally, not in Košice

The central body for recognising foreign education documents is the Centre for Recognition of Diplomas (SUDV) – part of the Slovak Ministry of Education with nationwide competence, acting under Act No. 422/2015 Coll. as amended by Acts No. 276/2017 and 83/2019. For Košice this means one important thing: there is no separate “Košice” procedure; the application is assessed centrally exactly as anywhere in Slovakia.

What documents to prepare (and in what order)

You attach the diploma or certificate with its subject-by-subject supplement, an apostille on the originals, and a sworn Slovak translation by a registered translator – in exactly that order, because the translation is made from the already-apostilled original and must include the apostille clause.

The name is the second critical detail: your passport, diploma and translation must all spell it identically. Even a small transliteration mismatch – one letter, one diacritic – is among the most common reasons SUDV returns an application, stretching the proceeding by extra weeks.

Ukrainian diplomas: apostille directly in Ukraine

Only the Ukrainian ministry can apostille a Ukrainian diploma – a Slovak authority has no authority to issue one. With our own offices in Kharkiv and Kyiv we file for the apostille directly in Ukraine and then provide the sworn Slovak translation of the documents.

You assemble the entire nostrification package without a single trip to Ukraine and without mailing originals across the border; the finished paperwork is delivered across eastern Slovakia or electronically.
