Sworn Hungarian Translation for Košice and the South of the Region

Eastern Slovakia’s Hungarian-speaking community does not live in Košice city itself but in the south of the region, along the Hungarian border: in the Trebišov district roughly 24% of residents declare Hungarian nationality, and a sizeable minority also lives in the Michalovce, Košice-okolie and Rožňava districts. That is where the typical work comes from – inheritance and property papers, civil-status certificates and family documents tied to Hungary. The sworn translation is produced by a translator from the Slovak Ministry of Justice register and delivered by post anywhere in the region or electronically – you travel nowhere.

  • Sworn Hungarian translator from the MS SR register – paper and electronic sworn translation
  • Inheritance, land and family documents across the Hungarian border – names and villages spelled consistently
  • For the whole south of the region: Trebišov, Michalovce, Košice-okolie and Rožňava – by post, no travelling
  • Usually no apostille between Slovakia and Hungary – we tell you what needs no translating

Where Hungarian lives in the east: the south of the Košice region

By the 2021 census the Trebišov district is roughly one-quarter Hungarian, and the minority is strongly represented in the Michalovce, Košice-okolie and Rožňava districts too – the belt along the state border with Hungary. In Košice city itself Hungarian is less present; the documents come above all from the south of the region.

That is why the service is built remotely: you email the scans from anywhere in the region and we deliver the finished sworn translation by post or electronically. There is no office you need to travel to.

Inheritance and property on both sides of the border

The most common Hungarian-language agenda: inheritance proceedings and property transfers where some documents originate in Hungary and some in Slovakia – wills, inheritance decisions, land-register extracts, purchase contracts. Courts and notaries require a sworn translation of every document not in the language of the proceedings.

We prepare the whole file at once and make sure the spelling of names and village names matches across all documents – exactly where inheritance files most often get stuck.

Marriage, birth, divorce: documents from both sides of the border

Cross-border marriages, births and divorces mean in practice that a Hungarian birth or marriage certificate has to be submitted to the Slovak registry office, and just as often the other way round. Because these are documents between two EU member states, an apostille generally does not apply to them (Regulation 2016/1191), and an official translation is enough.

In our experience, some Hungarian civil-status documents come with an EU multilingual standard form – in that case the registry office does not ask for a translation at all. We check for that option before we start translating.

Older documents issued in Hungarian

A long-settled minority also means older papers: register extracts, church records, school certificates and land documents written in Hungarian, sometimes by hand. Slovak authorities generally require a sworn translation of these.

Hard-to-read originals are no obstacle – we agree the approach and scope with the quote, based on what your institution requires.

FAQ

I live in Trebišov or Michalovce – do I have to travel anywhere?

No. You email the scans, receive the quote within hours, and we deliver the finished sworn translation by post or electronically with a qualified signature. A sworn translation is valid across Slovakia regardless of where it was produced.

I am settling an inheritance with documents from Slovakia and Hungary. Can you help?

Yes – we translate wills, inheritance decisions, land-register extracts and contracts both ways and align the spelling of names and villages so the file stands in both the Slovak and the Hungarian proceedings.

Does a Hungarian birth certificate need an apostille for a Slovak registry office?

Usually not – between EU countries most public documents are exempt under Regulation 2016/1191; a sworn translation is enough. With an EU multilingual standard form even that may not be needed – we verify with the quote.

We have old documents in Hungarian, some handwritten. Will you translate them?

Yes – older register, church, school and land documents are routine sworn work for us. For hard-to-read originals we agree the approach and scope with the quote.

How fast is a sworn Hungarian translation ready?

Standard documents usually within 2–3 business days, express by agreement; add postal time for paper delivery. An electronic translation is yours as soon as it is produced.

How much does a sworn Hungarian translation cost?

It depends on the document type and length – we quote individually after seeing the scans. Standard translation from €12 per standard page.
