Duplicate or copy: which one you actually need
These are different documents, and institutions do not confuse them. A copy is a photocopy of a diploma you still hold, certified by a notary: it confirms that the copy matches the original, but it carries no force of an original and does not replace a lost document. A duplicate is a new form issued by the educational institution itself in place of a lost or damaged one; it is marked “Duplicate”, carries its own number and has the full force of an original. If the diploma is lost, stolen or damaged, a duplicate is what you need – a notarized copy cannot help, because there is nothing left to copy. If the original is in your hands and the institution wants to keep a document, a certified copy is enough. The diploma supplement is a separate case: it is issued and restored independently of the diploma itself, so both should be ordered together.

The process of restoring a diploma begins with submitting an application to the educational institution, stating the details needed for a duplicate or a certified copy. At this stage, it is important to provide complete information about the document, including the name of the educational institution, year of graduation, and the series and number of the diploma (or certificate). The institution issues the duplicate under its own procedure, and once the form is in hand we take on the translation, the certification and the apostille.
