This is a guide based on Cabinet Resolution No. 55. The binding spelling is the one in your existing foreign passport (set by the State Migration Service) – we check the name against it before translating so it matches across all your documents.

When You Need a Marriage Certificate Translation

Translating a marriage certificate from Ukrainian to English is relevant in a variety of situations, including:

  • Visa Application: Many countries require a translated marriage certificate as part of the visa application process to confirm the applicant’s marital status.
  • Applying for citizenship: When submitting documents for citizenship in another country, presenting a certified translation of marriage certificate should be a priority.
  • Registering a marriage abroad: If you are considering getting married in another country, translating your marriage certificate is often a mandatory requirement.
  • Immigration procedures: When applying for immigration documents, the translation of family records, including the marriage certificate, is frequently required.
  • Inheritance matters: When dealing with inheritance matters abroad, a notarized translation of the marriage certificate may be necessary to confirm the claimant’s rights.

Requirements for Translating a Marriage Certificate

Names, dates, and other key details must be accurately rendered in line with the original document to avoid misunderstandings or issues when submitting it to official authorities. When translating a marriage certificate into English, it’s important to consider transliteration rules, language specifics, and the legal system of the country where the document will be submitted.

Like the certificate of change of surname translation, this document must match the format of the original, including the presentation of signatures, stamps, and other official marks. It’s essential for the translation to look like an official certificate, meeting all formatting requirements to ensure it is recognized and holds legal validity in the relevant country.

Stages of Marriage Certificate Translation

  1. Document assessment: The translator carefully reviews the original to identify important details and specific features.
  2. Text translation: The document is translated into the required language, considering all legal and linguistic nuances.
  3. Editing: The completed translation is checked for accuracy and aligned with the original document.
  4. Translation certification: If needed, the translation of the marriage certificate for visa purposes is notarized to confirm its legal validity.

When are you open?

All three offices — Kharkiv, Kyiv and Bratislava — are open Monday to Friday, 09:00–18:00. Each keeps its own local time, and Bratislava (Central European time) is an hour behind the two Ukrainian offices, so allow for that difference if you're calling from abroad.

Do I need to come to the office?

You don't need to visit us in person. Send scans of your documents by e-mail and we'll quote the price and turnaround; some services need the original, which then travels by courier or post instead of you. We return the finished document the same way — by post, or as a signed electronic file where the receiving authority accepts it.

Can I get the translation the same day?

It depends on which office handles your order. In Kharkiv and Kyiv a standard document can often be ready the same day if you send the scan early and choose the express option, which may cost extra — we confirm this when we quote. In Slovakia the timings are different: a sworn translation of a standard document usually takes up to 2–3 working days, express by arrangement, and what you receive the same day there is the quote rather than the finished translation. Larger or more complex jobs, and services that involve a state authority, take longer in either country.
